Atlanta Wrestling Entertainment
Atlanta Wrestling Entertainment (AWE) is an American professional wrestling promotion, founded in 2014 by Joshua Von Wheeler to fill the void of professional wrestling in the Atlanta market that was left behind after World Championship Wrestling (WCW) was acquired by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2001. Von Wheeler's first foray into pro wrestling promotions was over a decade ago with Pro Wrestling Evolution in Canton,〔(), ()〕 Georgia, which lasted three years before going defunct. Afterwards, he moved to Tampa, Florida, where he co-hosted a Georgia wrestling podcast.
It was during his time as a podcast host, seeing the wrestling scene in his home state diminish, that the idea of forming a new Georgia promotion came to him.
After moving back to Georgia, Von Wheeler bought a controlling share of East Coast Wrestling Entertainment, which was having shows at the Brady Recreation Center in College Park.〔(), ()〕 After putting on just two shows under the AWE banner, a dispute over in-ring talent caused the joint parties to split. Von Wheeler took AWE north to Canton, GA, where they would put on their next three shows at the Old Buffington Elementary School gymnasium.〔(), ()〕
After promoting five wrestling events outside of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area, AWE secured its first show in the city in January 2015 at the historic Atlanta venue, The Masquerade.〔(), ()〕 The main event of that show featured nationally known professional wrestler and Atlanta native, Jimmy Rave, who fought independent wrestling veteran Kyle Matthews.
